Movie Monday: Limitless

 Grade: B

Starring: Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro, Abbie Cornish

Probably like most people before they saw Limitless, all I knew about the movie was that it’s about some guy who takes a drug that allows him to access all of his brain. Struggling writer Eddie Morra, played by Bradley Cooper, is that guy andhe  takes the highly illegal and secretive drug NZT.

At first everything in Eddie’s life is improved by the drug which allows him to access every memory he has ever had, work for hours and retain everything he is told or taught. This part of the movie is complemented by funny narration from Eddie and cinematography to make the audience feel like they are also on the drug.

Eddie starts working for invest banker/millionaire Carl, played by Robert De Niro, and becomes a millionaire himself. He is also able to win back his ex-girlfriend Lindy, played by Abbie Cornish. As Eddie gets more and more rich and powerful and begins to run out of his supply of NZT he starts getting into trouble and dangerous situation.

All the suspenseful scenes in the middle of the movie make the non-suspenseful ones become increasingly dull. One moment the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat as Eddie is chased by mobsters and puts you to sleep the next as he talks about investment banking with Carl.

The end of the movie leaves the dullness behind and gets surprising violence with hands getting chopped off, an eye getting gouged out and blood drinking. The course of the movie is an exciting ride, it’s well-acted, well-scripted and has good cinematography but does have a few boring parts.
