How I Met Your Mother: “The Exploding Meatball Sub”Posted: April 12, 2011
Since this is my first post about How I Met Your Mother, I have to do some explaining. This post is going to more about HIMYM as a series than this particular episode, which was the average not that funny later seasons’ episode.
Unlike most people I have been watching HIMYM since it first premiered in 2005, which was back when I would say it was my favorite show and people would said they had never heard of it. The show remained a little-known hilarious sit-com that actually had an ongoing plot for the first two seasons, which are the best if you ask me.
HIMYM slowly began to gain popularity during season three with guest stars like Mandy Moore, Britney Spears, Enrique Iglesias and Scrubs’ Sarah Chalke. I thought it was good for the show that it was becoming more well-known. It was still funny and was following the ongoing story-line that creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas originally set up to last five seasons. But as the show got more and more popular, it kept getting renewed for more seasons. So, the little show no one had heard of that was hilarious and only supposed to last five seasons has turned into a widely popular not funny, barely holding onto a story-line eight season long show. Which is ridiculous for a show all building up for one moment, Ted (Josh Radnor) meeting the mother. I’m sorry Carter and Craig, but you are sell-outs.
Up until about the end of season four, almost everything that happened progressed the story-line. As Older Ted (voiced by Bob Saget) said in the pilot it isn’t just the story of how he met the mother, it is the story of how he become the person he had to be to meet her. But, sadly, most episode after the start of season five, like “The Exploding Meatball Sub” for example, have abandoned that idea.
And now, in season six, it is like the show is also abandoning plot points that have already been established. For instance, romantic tension seems to be building between Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin (Cobie Smulders) again. But in an earlier episode Older Ted told us that Robin is going to marry Don, who seems to have been written off the show. Another forgotten fact seems to be that we know exactly who the mother is; Cindy’s roommate. Yet Cindy also seems to have been written off the show.
With all that said I still continue to watch HIMYM, but usually I am only left with the longing for what has passed. Hopefully the show can turn itsself around, but I’ve been saying that for while.
