The Stinson Missile Crisis

Airdate: 10/3/11

How I Met Your Mother has forgotten a lot of things since the series started; jokes that have already been done, Robin’s apparent husband Don, the mother is Cindy’s roommate, the show was only supposed to have five seasons. But in this episode, and the next one, the show has forgotten two very important aspects; this is the story of how Ted (Josh Radnor) become the person he had to be to meet the mother and that Ted is the main character.

This episode is told in a series of flashbacks by Robin (Cobie Smulders), who is explaining to her court-appointed therapist Kevin, played by Kal Penn, how she ended up there. The episode is narrated and focused on Robin, not Ted. Actually Ted doesn’t even have a main story line. Robin keeps doing things that show she is getting increasingly jealous of Barney’s (Neil Patrick Harris) relationship with Nora (Nazanin Boniadi).

Nora is sent to France for a business trip and Robin uses the time to try to sabotage the relationship. It ends up that Robin assaults a woman she originally sent to attempt to make Barney and Nora break up. Kevin makes Robin realize that she just wants Barney to be happy. The story line was not that funny, but it ended with a kind of sweet plot development. The story line for the other three characters was just terrible. If it wasn’t for Kal Penn’s guest appearance, I would have given this episode an F.

Field Trip

This episode continued the Robin and Kevin story line. He said he couldn’t be here therapist anymore because he’s moving to Alaska. Turns out he only said that because he thinks she is cute and he can’t be her therapist if he is attracted to her. They spend a week sort of dating because Kevin can’t date a patient. This is a recycled conflict from when Ted and Stella first meet in season three. Robin and Kevin start dating anyway but everyone keeps telling them that its creepy.

Ted and Marshall (Jason Segel) spend most of the episode in not funny work story lines. Lily (Alyson Hannigan) gets looped into Marshall’s. Barney’s main problem in this episode is that Nora doesn’t like ewoks from Star Wars. Again with the Ted and Stella stuff season three because they had a problem when Stella said she didn’t like Star Wars. Barney ends up getting over that by the end of the episode.

Kevin said its weird with Robin because he met her when she was in a vulnerable place. She makes this up by being his “therapist” for two hours, which was actually really cute. It seems like the sweet little love story is now Robin’s instead of Ted’s, like it used to be. I’m not really sure if Ted is the main character anymore, which sort of tosses aside the plot of the show. Anyway, Robin has the most interesting story line right now. Also I hope Kal Penn stays around because he seems to be helping the show.
