How I Met Your Mother: “The Slutty Pumpkin Returns”Posted: November 3, 2011
Monday’s episode of How I Met Your Mother started out very good, but kept getting progressively worse. I went into the episode excited that they were continuing a story line from season one. But I knew that Katie Holmes had been cast as the Slutty Pumpkin, really? You had six years to cast this part and you choose Katie Holmes?
Anyway, the opening scene was actually funny. HIMYM sometimes falls back on the Robin’s (Cobie Smulders) Canadian thing, which is usually Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) making fun of her. Robin finds out on Facebook from Barney’s long last dad that his mom was born in Canada, making Barney one-fourth Canadian. Of course, Barney is freaked out by this and Robin makes fun of him. It was pretty funny for the first few scenes, but it was continued too long. Also in the opening, Barney was drinking Red Bull. I know this is a small detail, but in the early seasons Barney drank Red Bull so much that the company gave Neil Patrick Harris a lifetime supply.
So with Red Bull, Canadian jokes and the knowledge that they Slutty Pumpkin would be returning the episode seemed pretty old school HIMYM. But by about the third scene all of this was lost.
Ted (Josh Radnor) is able to track down the Slutty Pumpkin, whose name is Naomi, after he sees the costume in a store. Naomi ends up being really weird and they don’t work together at all. We find out at the end of the episode that Naomi was playing up the weird to get Ted to break up with her because she knew it was awkward. I wish we found this out sooner, because it was uncomfortably awkward for most of the episode.
Marshall (Jason Segel) and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) have their own plot line. Lily–who is suffering from pregnancy brain, according to Robin– is trying to convince Marshal to move to the suburbs. The plot line wasn’t terrible but I wouldn’t say it was good either.
Naomi ends up breaking up with Ted at the roof-top party where they first meet. The party was a one of a couple familiar scenes or situations from earlier seasons, which I think is good because the episode is the conclusion to a season one story line.
It is usually a hit or miss with cameos for HIMYM. Mandy Moore and Enrique Iglesias in the first episodes of season three was very good. Britney Spears in season three was by far the best, oddly enough. Both the last two, Katy Perry as Honey and Katie Holmes as Naomi, weren’t really good or funny. But those were in the later seasons, so maybe I’m just being bias. I like some of the episode I hated other parts. C+.
