“I’m like what in the books?”: The Xaro Xhoan Daxos EditionPosted: July 12, 2012
To make this post less confusing let’s start with what did not change about Xaro Xhoan Daxos: he lives in Qarth, his name is Xaro Xhoan Daxos, he is a shaky ally to Daenerys Targaryen and wants to marry her.
Of course, Qarth is also completely different. So, he just lives in a free city called Qarth.
For those of you who have not read the book, Xaro Xhoan Daxos is one of the Thirteen of Qarth, but the Thirteen are not the ruling class. They are just a bunch of super rich merchants. Xaro is the only one we meet and he is pasty white, prone to randomly start weeping and gay. Now, I understanding doing something like making a character foreign because the actress you like has an accent. But switching Xaro Xhoan Daxos from weepy, white and gay to tough, black and straight?
I have no idea why, but Nonso Anozie was cast as Dany’s questionable ally. And I say questionable because as “Rolling Stone” put it there is far less dragon kidnapping and handmaiden murdering in the book version of Qarth. Xaro, in the book, helps Dany out but refuses to give her all his money if she does not marry him.
So, similar to the books. But, the vault filled with nothing, Xaro alliance with Pyat Pree, him declaring himself King of Qarth, kidnapping her dragons, bedding her handmaid, and getting locked in a vault does not happen.
Dany ends on good terms with Xaro in the books. She just says good-bye to him as the de es machina happens. Magistar Illyrio some how found out she was in Qarth and sends a ship, a eunuch and a Maester to take her to wherever she wants to go. Not your best plot twist, Mr. Martin
In the show, she locks him in a vault to die. One thing I did like about the change is that the idea of Dany marrying Xaro Xhoan Daxos was not as ridiculous. In the book, he is more or less the Spice King (who doesn’t exist in the book), but even more gay.
Show Xaro effectively flirts with her and tells her that he was married once for love and will do it for politics a second time. For a little, I seriously thought she might marry him or at least I could see it.
I’m not really a fan of the Qarth story line in the book or show. Yes, “dracarys” was awesome, weird mask lady was intriguing and I did love the House of The Undying. But having a story line that spans the length of an entire season/book to teach Daenerys a lesson she has already learn from season/book one (Nobody is going to give you the Iron Throne, you must take it with fire and blood) is annoying.
One change I really don’t like is the handmaid and blood rider killing that happened in the show. Not all of it was Xaro’s fault. Rakaro was killed by some other khalsaar. Doreah was killed because she sided with Xaro. And he killed Irri, there is no getting around that one.
I just have to ask the writers one thing, “Why are we killing off all of Dany’s friends?” In the books Doreah dies of sickness in the Red Waste, but Rakaro and Irri are still kicking. Please stop killing all the Dothraki, writers. And please no more drastic character changing, it hasn’t been going that well for you.
