Once Upon A Time: “Quite of Common Fairy” (S3Ep3)

Grade: A

Airdate: 10/13/13

Once Upon A Time is usually pretty crazy with its femslash subtext, but this episode was ridiculous. I could do a whole other post about the Swanqueen subtext, Tinkerbell (Rose McIver) seemed like a former fling of Regina’s (Lana Parrilla) and the show outed Mulan (Jamie Chung)! I will try to be happy about that fact and stop dwelling on the show making Sleeping Warrior, my favorite ship, canon just to destroy it.

Well, that took long enough.

Anyway, we meet up with the gang in Neverland trying to follow Pan’s (Robbie Kay) map but his camp keeps moving. Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) says he knows someone who might be able to help them, a fairy named Tinkerbell. Emma almost laughs and I’m glad the show keeps poking fun at itself. Henry (Jared Gilmore) also told Pan not liking apples runs in his family. Regina is not cool with the gang getting Tinkerbell’s help and that sends us into the flashback story line.

I think we’re lost.

In the Enchanted Forest in the past, Regina is having dinner and eating swan. Even Rumple (Robert Carlyle) had to laugh at that subtext joke. I think this is supposed to be shortly after “The Doctor” but before Regina goes full evil. She hasn’t been showing up to training and says she isn’t sure if she wants to end up like Rumple. After dinner, she goes to her room and falls off her balcony. But, Tinkerbell uses pixie dust, which is stronger than Fairy Dust, and saves her. Tink tells her it is her second chance to be happy.

Tinkerbell tells her she can find happiness and love again. Tinkerbell agrees to help and gets herself in all types of trouble doing so. She gets the Blue Fairy (Keegan Connor Tracy) mad at her in the Fairy headquarters, which is in a Georgia O’Keefe painting. But, Tinkerbell still steals pixie dust to save Regina.

The award for closest to original character goes to Tinkerbell.

Back in Neverland, the gang is looking for Tinkerbell, who is tailing them. Regina then asks Emma to do magic with her. Dear god, I love this episode. Anytime two members of the group split off and started talking to each other, the sexual tension was insane. I’m even shipping Hooking a little. Regina tells Emma they might be able to save Henry together. But, Emma gets cock blocked by Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) and they decide to stick with the plan. Hook tells Charming (Josh Dallas) that he needs to tell Snow about his idiot wound because he might be dead in days.

Regina, I can’t make magic with you right now. My parents are 10 feet away.

In the present day Enchanted Forest, Neal (Michael Raymond-James), Mulan and Robin Hood (Dean McGuire) make a plan to get to Neverland. Neal wants to use Robin’s son to call the shadow. It works and Neal gets taken after going on about how much he loves Emma and tells Mulan again that you can’t wait forever to tell someone you love them.

In the past Enchanted Forest, Tinkerbell leads Regina to her soul mate, a man with a lion tattoo. But, Regina can’t go inside the tavern to meet him. Blue gets pissed on Tinkerbell and takes her wings and magic. Well that was mean, Blue.

Regina decided to stay behind in Neverland because she didn’t want to see Tinkerbell but she ends up finding her anyway. Regina apologizes to Tinkerbell while having another death wish moment. She talks out her own heart and dares Tink to crush it. She confesses that hate was all she had and who would happy her be? She tells Tinkerbell hope is better than revenge and she can’t make the same choice she did.

Tinkerbell agrees to help only after Snow and Charming promise her a place in Storybrooke. Charming can’t tell Snow he is going to die after she talks about how he is her home. And Josh Dallas and Ginnifer Goodwin just got engaged in real life. They are disgustingly cute.

Now to the part that had me squealing and then yelling at my laptop. Mulan leaves Robin Hood and goes to confess her love to Aurora (Sarah Bolger). She is about to tell her but Aurora says she has news too and tells her she and Phillip are going to have a baby. Mulan then doesn’t tell her and says she is going to join Robin Hood and his men. OUAT made Sleeping Warrior canon just to crush our hearts. This is way I have a love/hate relationship with this show.

First canon gay story line: heartbreak.

I’m pissed about what happened with Sleeping Warrior but the show does finally have a LGBT character. And Robin Hood is the man with the lion tattoo, so hopefully these two will be back soon. Mulan was already one of my favorite characters and even more now, so I don’t want to have to wait half a season to see her again. Tinkerbell is super cool and I like the dynamic she has going on with Regina. Regina and Emma also seem to be getting along together better. Maybe they actually will save Henry, but he does seem to be buying into Pan’s theory that he has to stay and help bring magic back into the world.

Not even Henry is totally on board with saving Henry.
